Best Halloween Costumes

Every year at the end of October kids and adults alike get dressed up in costumes and try to scare neighbors, friends and relatives. It's called Halloween and when you combine candy, spooky costumes and fun you've got a holiday worth celebrating. Here are some of my favourite costume ideas from years past.

The cowboy and particularly the sheriff has always been a favourite among younger boys. It was popular when I was a kid and every year I still see my fair share of young cowboys, pretending that they are the good guys.

What the cowboy costume is to little boys, the princess costume is to little girls. Little girls love to get dressed up, the more sparkles the better. Don't forget the tiara. Some little girls also like to have a sceptre or wand to complete the costume.

Pirates have been popular forever and with the Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies having had such success, every little boy, and my little girl, wants to be captain Jack Sparrow. Don't forget the other popular pirate related characters like Captain Hook and Peter Pan.

The witch and princess witch are two costumes that work very well. This all depends on your little girl, some want to be scary, others want to be a friendly witch. The pretty witch has the hat, but not the nose and the clothes have some lighter colours in them.

The devil is a controversial Halloween costume. I know some parents who are so against this costume that it causes them to ignore Halloween all together. To these people I say "get a grip". It's just pretend. Anyway, the devil, all in red with a tail and horns is one of the coolest kid costumes around.

The mummy costume, like pirates has seen a revival lately. This is mostly because of the success of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns movies. It's an easy costume to do and can be pretty creepy in the dark.

I'm going to group all of the super hero's together. Spider-Man should be big this year, as should Superman. Just don't forget the Hulk, Wonder-Woman and Batman. All are favourites almost every year.

Star Wars seems to be it's own genre of Halloween costume. So many characters in the movies translate well into costumes. Chewy is always fun. When I was a kid it was Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia and of course Darth Vader and storm troopers. Nowadays it's Anakin and anyone else in the Jedi order and the Sith or of course Padme for the girls.

For scary costumes, look to the movies. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nighmare of Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If there aren't enough scary examples in those, then you're not looking hard enough.

When I was in university I needed a costume for a Halloween party. After much searching, my sister said that she would make me one and we started looking through patterns. I found Sylvester the cat. This was my personal favourite costumer of all time. It was about 300 degrees inside, but it was a big hit at the party. The next year she made me a shark, not quite as good, but still pretty cool. A couple of years after that my girlfriend decided she wanted to be Tweety. I found Sylvester again and we went to a party as Sylvester and Tweety. Her big old yellow bird head made her about a foot taller than me. It was probably our best Halloween party ever, the costumes made it.

Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

Need a Halloween costume but running low on time? Here are some Halloween costume ideas that take very little time -- and more importantly, very little money.

Turning Regular Clothes into a Last Minute Costume

One quick way to create a last minute Halloween costume is by using the clothes you already have! Try perusing your mother's closet for vintage or worn clothes. You can use these clothes and dress up as a person from a specific era, like the 70s or 80s. For example, if you find a lot of clothes from the 80s, take those clothes, primp up your hair, and you've got yourself a Halloween costume! You don't necessarily have to dress as a character for Halloween -- you just need to have a theme.

A quick note: the 40s are coming back into fashion, so try finding clothes that fit with that era. Pin-up models are extremely popular now. All you need is red lipstick, a little eye shadow, curled hair – and you've got a last minute look that didn't stress your pocketbook.

Use Makeup to Your Advantage

Another easy way to create a last minute Halloween costume is by using makeup. For example, if you want to dress up as a bear, put on a pair of jeans and a brown T-shirt, then paint your face. Go to a local store and buy brown gloves for an added effect.

If you want to dress up as your favorite character, dress up in appropriate clothes (if you want to dress up as Jack Sparrow, for example, wear a white shirt, jeans, and boots) and use makeup to recreate his or her face. If your Halloween costume is an angry pirate, paint black eye shadow on your eyelids and draw on a swirly mustache. If you're going as an angelic princess, put on red lipstick and gently paint sparkly eye shadow on your eyelids. Buy a cheap tiara and you're ready to go!

Accessorize To Create Awesome Halloween Costumes

A very simple way to create a last minute Halloween costume is to accessorize. Wear whatever you want, but add a themed accessory to make your outfit truly Halloween-esque. You can visit a Halloween store to pick up a cool accessory or two -- they're usually very affordable. Themed hair bands are very popular, and many females wear cat hair bands to quickly make their outfit Halloween approved. Men, are you feeling devilish? Buy a devil hair band and show your sinister side. There are numerous themed hair bands you could buy to instantly turn your outfit into a last minute Halloween costume, but don't get too crazy with it.

As you can see, it's very easy to create a last minute Halloween costume without spending too much time, effort, or money. Remember to check your closet for last minute ideas, use makeup creatively, and use accessories to deck out your Halloween costume. You won't stress out finding a Halloween costume – better yet, you'll save money in the process.

Halloween

The Fantasy and Folklore of All Hallows

Jack Santino

Halloween had its beginnings in an ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of the dead. The Celtic peoples, who were once found all over Europe, divided the year by four major holidays. According to their calendar, the year began on a day corresponding to November 1st on our present calendar. The date marked the beginning of winter. Since they were pastoral people, it was a time when cattle and sheep had to be moved to closer pastures and all livestock had to be secured for the winter months. Crops were harvested and stored. The date marked both an ending and a beginning in an eternal cycle.

The festival observed at this time was called Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween). It was the biggest and most significant holiday of the Celtic year. The Celts believed that at the time of Samhain, more so than any other time of the year, the ghosts of the dead were able to mingle with the living, because at Samhain the souls of those who had died during the year traveled into the otherworld. People gathered to sacrifice animals, fruits, and vegetables. They also lit bonfires in honor of the dead, to aid them on their journey, and to keep them away from the living. On that day all manner of beings were abroad: ghosts, fairies, and demons--all part of the dark and dread.

Samhain became the Halloween we are familiar with when Christian missionaries attempted to change the religious practices of the Celtic people. In the early centuries of the first millennium A.D., before missionaries such as St. Patrick and St. Columcille converted them to Christianity, the Celts practiced an elaborate religion through their priestly caste, the Druids, who were priests, poets, scientists and scholars all at once. As religious leaders, ritual specialists, and bearers of learning, the Druids were not unlike the very missionaries and monks who were to Christianize their people and brand them evil devil worshippers.

As a result of their efforts to wipe out "pagan" holidays, such as Samhain, the Christians succeeded in effecting major transformations in it. In 601 A.D. Pope Gregory the First issued a now famous edict to his missionaries concerning the native beliefs and customs of the peoples he hoped to convert. Rather than try to obliterate native peoples' customs and beliefs, the pope instructed his missionaries to use them: if a group of people worshipped a tree, rather than cut it down, he advised them to consecrate it to Christ and allow its continued worship.

In terms of spreading Christianity, this was a brilliant concept and it became a basic approach used in Catholic missionary work. Church holy days were purposely set to coincide with native holy days. Christmas, for instance, was assigned the arbitrary date of December 25th because it corresponded with the mid-winter celebration of many peoples. Likewise, St. John's Day was set on the summer solstice.

Samhain, with its emphasis on the supernatural, was decidedly pagan. While missionaries identified their holy days with those observed by the Celts, they branded the earlier religion's supernatural deities as evil, and associated them with the devil. As representatives of the rival religion, Druids were considered evil worshippers of devilish or demonic gods and spirits. The Celtic underworld inevitably became identified with the Christian Hell.

The effects of this policy were to diminish but not totally eradicate the beliefs in the traditional gods. Celtic belief in supernatural creatures persisted, while the church made deliberate attempts to define them as being not merely dangerous, but malicious. Followers of the old religion went into hiding and were branded as witches.

The Christian feast of All Saints was assigned to November 1st. The day honored every Christian saint, especially those that did not otherwise have a special day devoted to them. This feast day was meant to substitute for Samhain, to draw the devotion of the Celtic peoples, and, finally, to replace it forever. That did not happen, but the traditional Celtic deities diminished in status, becoming fairies or leprechauns of more recent traditions.

The old beliefs associated with Samhain never died out entirely. The powerful symbolism of the traveling dead was too strong, and perhaps too basic to the human psyche, to be satisfied with the new, more abstract Catholic feast honoring saints. Recognizing that something that would subsume the original energy of Samhain was necessary, the church tried again to supplant it with a Christian feast day in the 9th century. This time it established November 2nd as All Souls Day--a day when the living prayed for the souls of all the dead. But, once again, the practice of retaining traditional customs while attempting to redefine them had a sustaining effect: the traditional beliefs and customs lived on, in new guises.

All Saints Day, otherwise known as All Hallows (hallowed means sanctified or holy), continued the ancient Celtic traditions. The evening prior to the day was the time of the most intense activity, both human and supernatural. People continued to celebrate All Hallows Eve as a time of the wandering dead, but the supernatural beings were now thought to be evil. The folk continued to propitiate those spirits (and their masked impersonators) by setting out gifts of food and drink. Subsequently, All Hallows Eve became Hallow Evening, which became Hallowe'en--an ancient Celtic, pre-Christian New Year's Day in contemporary dress.

Many supernatural creatures became associated with All Hallows. In Ireland fairies were numbered among the legendary creatures who roamed on Halloween. An old folk ballad called "Allison Gross" tells the story of how the fairy queen saved a man from a witch's spell on Halloween.

O Allison Gross, that lives in yon tower
the ugliest witch int he North Country...
She's turned me into an ugly worm
and gard me toddle around a tree...

But as it fell out last Hallow even
When the seely [fairy] court was riding by,
the Queen lighted down on a gowany bank
Not far from the tree where I wont to lie...
She's change me again to my own proper shape
And I no more toddle about the tree.

In old England cakes were made for the wandering souls, and people went "a' soulin'" for these "soul cakes." Halloween, a time of magic, also became a day of divination, with a host of magical beliefs: for instance, if persons hold a mirror on Halloween and walk backwards down the stairs to the basement, the face that appears in the mirror will be their next lover.

Virtually all present Halloween traditions can be traced to the ancient Celtic day of the dead. Halloween is a holiday of many mysterious customs, but each one has a history, or at least a story behind it. The wearing of costumes, for instance, and roaming from door to door demanding treats can be traced to the Celtic period and the first few centuries of the Christian era, when it was thought that the souls of the dead were out and around, along with fairies, witches, and demons. Offerings of food and drink were left out to placate them. As the centuries wore on, people began dressing like these dreadful creatures, performing antics in exchange for food and drink. This practice is called mumming, from which the practice of trick-or-treating evolved. To this day, witches, ghosts, and skeleton figures of the dead are among the favorite disguises. Halloween also retains some features that harken back to the original harvest holiday of Samhain, such as the customs of bobbing for apples and carving vegetables, as well as the fruits, nuts, and spices cider associated with the day.

Today Halloween is becoming once again and adult holiday or masquerade, like mardi Gras. Men and women in every disguise imaginable are taking to the streets of big American cities and parading past grinningly carved, candlelit jack o'lanterns, re- enacting customs with a lengthy pedigree. Their masked antics challenge, mock, tease, and appease the dread forces of the night, of the soul, and of the otherworld that becomes our world on this night of reversible possibilities, inverted roles, and transcendency. In so doing, they are reaffirming death and its place as a part of life in an exhilarating celebration of a holy and magic evening.

Sexy Halloween Costume Ideas

Are you tired of the same old scary Halloween costumes? Do you want to be unique and different from all the rest this year? Then add a sexy twist to your costume! Here are some sexy Halloween costume ideas that you can try out.

Scary Can Be Sexy, Too

The classic scary Halloween costumes can be sexy in their own way. For example, a vampire can definitely catch your eye if she's wearing a skin-tight leather outfit with a little cleavage. Witches can also be seductive when wearing a mini skirt. Just show a little more skin on your usual Halloween costumes, and you will surely stand out!

Fairytales Are Not Just For Kids

Even adults can dress up in their favorite fairytale Halloween characters by giving them some added sex appeal. Some fairytale characters, such as Tinkerbell, are naturally sexy. You can go for that, or you can make your own sexy version of your chosen character. By using a little imagination, you can make a sexy version of Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks, or Snow White. A common way to do this is to make the dress as short as you possibly can. Together with this, you can wear a pair of fishnet stockings and high-heeled shoes.

Sporty Women are Definitely Hot

Appreciating sports is definitely a plus in a man's book. Go for a sexy but sporty look this year by donning your favorite team's jersey. Just open a couple of buttons on the shirt and shorten the bottom, and you're done! You can also go for the sexy cheerleader outfit. Wear a fitted top, a short skirt and shake those pom-poms!

The Sexy Working Woman

Women who are successful and established in their careers exude a certain sense of hotness. You can make this even more obvious by revealing a little more skin with your career woman outfit. Choose from the stern librarian, the seductive French maid, the desirable nurse, the tantalizing stewardess, the Army officer or the foxy businesswoman, to name just a few. Make the hemline a few inches shorter and the neckline a few inches lower for a sexier touch.

Don't Mess with Superheroes

Some of the classic superheroes we all know and love are actually very sexy women. Wonderwoman wears only a corset top and shorts. Batgirl wears a skirt that's way too short. Catwoman's tight body is outlined in her figure-hugging leather suit. These superheroes are just too hot to handle!

Other Popular Sexy Characters

Aside from those mentioned above, there are other popular characters that exude a sexy appeal. Sexy celebrities that are popular Halloween choices include Paris Hilton and Marilyn Monroe. Other sexy characters that you may want to dress up as include the classic schoolgirl, the Greek goddess, the fairy, Cleopatra, the pirate wench, the gangster moll and the Playboy bunny, among others.

Remember to spice up your outfit by choosing the right accessories - use dark eye make-up and deep red lipstick to look even more alluring, wear chokers or dangling earrings for added flair, and bring other accessories, such as fake guns, when necessary. Put on some sexy stockings for even more appeal. Most importantly, be comfortable in what you're wearing and have some fun. This Halloween, stay away from the regular scary costumes. Go for something unique by choosing one of these sexy Halloween costume ideas!

Hot Trends in Sexy Halloween Costumes

Sexy Halloween costumes have become extremely popular in the past few years, and trends are moving down south -- south as in the size of clothing, that is. Expect to see even sexier Halloween costumes with classic accessories, pin-up inspired designs, and naughty versions of your father's favorite sport. Here's what hot now in adult, sexy Halloween costume design.

Trends Return to the 40s and 50s

Currently fashion is heading back to the glamour years of the 40s, and so are sexy Halloween costumes. Instead of the porn-esque sexiness of costumes showcased in the last decade, Halloween costumes are slowly being replaced with classy, burlesque-inspired numbers. Dita Von Teese, a famous burlesque dancer, has modeled for some of these sexy Halloween costumes. Most of these sexy designs featured pin-up legends (think Bettie Page). As fashion turns to the past for its inspiration, more and more Halloween costumes will take the same path. Expect to see sexy pin-up costumes, such as Marilyn Monroe or Bettie Page, and classic designs revived. High-waist Halloween costumes will also come into play.

Short, Sexy, and Seductive

On the opposite end, more revealing adult Halloween costumes are being introduced to the market. The popular nurse costumes of last year are being shortened drastically -- but this shortening isn't with the amount of Halloween costumes being produced. This shortening has to do with the length of these sexy Halloween costumes. Skirts are shorter (some are even intended to show off your bum), V-necks are dipping downwards, and there is less and less emphasis on covering those private assets. Clearly trends are saying less is more when it comes to sexy Halloween costumes.

Adult Costumes Trends Turning to the Obscure

More trends in adult costuming lean towards obscure, offensive designs. Last year showcased the controversial Anna-Rexia costume, an adult Halloween costume meant to make Anorexia look sexy. Advocacy groups were outraged by this design and said it mocked the seriousness of Anorexia Nervosa. Another adult costume showcased was a psychiatric ward costume. So what should you expect this year? Look for more obscure designs hitting markets, and expect Anna-Rexia to stay in season for Halloween costumes. Expect to see more designs make certain mental issues look sexy, and do expect more advocacy groups to be outraged by these trends.

This Isn't Your Father's Sports Team!

Sexy Halloween costumes versions of sports-related professions have grown in popularity, and many women are choosing to wear these suggestive designs to Halloween after-parties. What to expect: very adult baseball costumes, adult Halloween referee costumes, sexy football designs, and Nascar girls. These sexy Halloween costume trends don't look like they'll die out anytime soon.

Trends Leaning to Post 9/11 Adult Halloween Designs

Now these trends are a bit perplexing. Since 9/11, police and firefighter Halloween costumes have become extremely popular. Coincidence? There are so many sexy versions of these hero-inspired costumes that you can't shop without running into at least three different versions of these popular designs. Chances are these sexy Halloween costume designs will increase in popularity.

It's also important to note that trends in sexy male costuming have not changed since the beginning of adult Halloween costuming. This just doesn't seem to be a growing field, so don't expect anything new with sexy male costumes. Clearly the females are leading this round. The growth in this area will continue to expand for years to come, so watch for new designs and sexy Halloween costume takes on modest ideas.

Halloween - 2007 film

Halloween is a 2007 remake of the 1978 slasher film of the same name. The film was written, produced, and directed by Rob Zombie. The film stars Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Sam Loomis, Tyler Mane as the adult Michael Myers, and Scout Taylor-Compton as Laurie Strode; Daeg Faerch portrays a ten year old Michael Myers. Rob Zombie's "reimagining" follows the premise of John Carpenter's original, with Michael Myers stalking Laurie Strode and her friends on Halloween night. Zombie's film goes deeper into the character's psyche, trying to answer the question of what drove him to kill people, whereas in Carpenter's original film Michael did not have an explicit reason for killing.

Working from Carpenter's advice to "make [the film] his own", Zombie chose to develop the film as both a prequel and a remake, allowing for more original content than simply refilming the same scenes. Despite mostly negative reviews, the film, which cost $15 million to make, went on to gross $79 million worldwide.

Costume Parties

Costume Parties are especially popular in the United States around Halloween, when teenagers and adults who may be considered too old for trick-or-treating attend a costume party in its place. Halloween costume parties are rarely featured in fashionable movies, such as Mean Girls. Costume parties are also fashionable during the Carnival season, such as at Mardi gras. Costume parties are also held for in style science fiction and fantasy events, movie openings and book releases. Website theonering.net held a The Lord of the Rings dress Oscar party that was attended by Peter Jackson. Star Wars parties were held to celebrate the opening of Episode I. Many bookstores have held Harry Potter themed parties to celebrate the releases of the series' later novels, and some movie theaters have had Potter-themed celebrations as the movie adaptations have been released.

Most Uninspired Ten Halloween Costumes

Seeing as it is that time of year again, I would like to create a small public announcement to every person for Halloween this year… BE CREATIVE

There are so many huge thoughts out there that you can choose from these days. You can be current and political with your costume and create a statement, or you can choose a customary tried and true costume that is sure to please everyone. All I ask of you is that you put some genuine thought and effort into it, and make it your own.

I am also going to take this time to single out that person who wears the same costume year after year. You are not fooling anybody. I see you cowering in the back of the room there, let this be your warning.

As with all of these costumes, they can be done right… but most of the time, they are done awfully wrong.

1. Ghost – Ok, If you are taking a sheet and wounding out two eye holes… you formally have the lamest costume ever. You are not Charlie Brown, use your brain a little and put some effort into your costume. Have some fun with it! Hey, possibly you can be that ghost… but be dressed as Charlie Brown underneath!

2. Hippie - A Vest and Rose colored glasses does not make a logical costume. If you have to explain what you are, then you have failed. Even if you make a decision to sew a flower pedal on the back of your jeans it does not show devotion. Now, if you were not to shower for a month and show up with enough LSD for all the party guests, then you might get a pass.

3. Hobo – This costume goes to the guy who realizes that he does not have a costume for a party that he is attending in just about thirty minutes. “Oh man, I improved think of something fast.” He then profits to rip up and old pair of jeans and jacket and roll around in the dirt pile outside. This is desperate, not creative.

4. Caveman/Cavewoman – The faux fur and giant club are not too kind to most people. This costume is typically very unfortunate for guys, as they cut the tunic too short. Word for the wise, if I can see your jimmy jangler, the costumes too short.

5. Trailer Trash / Hillbilly – Most probable if you already own all to wear this costume… well… you get the drift.

6. Jason – Yes I know that he is a typical movie villain but I am sick of people slapping on any random goalie mask and calling themselves Jason. If you are going to be Jason this year, at least carry around a machete and severed head or some diverse body part.

7. Sexy Nurse - I am going to get into problem for this one. Don’t get me wrong; I am not against seeing ludicrously hot girls getting almost naked, but this is about the principal. Taking any costume and cutting 8 inches off of everywhere and undoing seven buttons does not make it a creative one.

8. Cowboy / Cowgirl – Jeans , plaid shirt, cowboy hat…done. This certainly one of the most uninspired costumes ever. If more than half of the country dresses similar to this every day- it is not a costume.

9. Pimp – You are a middle class white kid from the Midwest… places the pimp cane down.

10. Army Guy – Just as you own a camo shirt, or a pair of camo pants, does not make you an officer of the military.
